Franschhoek Wine Valley

Explorers Club

‘As I parked in the shade of the ancient oak outside The Explorers Club, I initially thought, well this is perfect… Set one street back from Franschhoek’s main road you can walk into town in two minutes, yet you are secluded enough to enjoy the tranquil setting. But once Jo showed me through to the open-plan main living space, my thoughts quickly changed to… In fact I’m not sure I am going to be moving too far from here actually! Jo is an avid map collector and throughout the house tales of exploration, ancient and modern, are illustrated both by Jo’s collection and also in expressive African scenes captured by celebrated photographer Horst Klemm. The bedrooms all have their own individual feel, some with skylights, all adorned with colourful artefacts and prints. For travelling families there is a room with two double bunks where teenagers can natter away into the early hours. The hub of the house is the open-plan lounge-dining-kitchen area, which leads out to a sun-drenched (when it’s sunny, of course) wooden pool deck, lap pool and your own private vineyard. I don’t know if there is such a thing as contemporary-rustic, but that’s what springs to mind! So simple, so very, very comfortable, yet with a state-of-the-art kitchen, aircon, DVD library and plasma screen et al. I imagine cosy evenings around the original wagon-wheel-framed dining table, the fire crackling away in the hearth, as would-be explorers put together plans for future expeditions. No children under 12.’
