Talk about farm-life paradise! This Eden-like garden does not disappoint and remains the weekend staple for all us locals. From the beloved donkeys eagerly awaiting young guests (and their pockets full of farm-stall feeding treats), to garden adventures, farm-stall shopping, a gelato room for ice cream treats while you explore, educational workshop and scavenger hunts… Babylonstoren most certainly knows how to bring out the child-like wonder in us all…Kids can also partake in egg collecting and fruit and vegetable harvesting from the garden. Rickety Bridge

Nestled against the majestic Wemmershoek Mountains, Rickety Bridge offers an array of experiences for all ages. Paulina’s restaurant serves bistro-style dishes, including breakfasts, lunches and tasting plates, with a dedicated kid’s menu. For an interactive foodie experience- try the Potjiekos Experience, where families can enjoy quality time together as they cook up a storm and their own take on the traditional South African dish together, making ‘masterchefs’ out of you all yet!

The younger family members can also partake in boules, lawn games or explore the jungle gym area. Huguenot Chocolate Tour

You’re sure to smell it out before you see it….Follow the heavenly chocolate aromas down the main road until you find Huguenot Fine Chocolates- a boutique Chocolaterie, offering a delicious range of chocolates, all made from the finest imported Belgian chocolate. Chocolates are made in view of visitors – allowing for great ‘ooh and aaahh’ moments for the little ones and for older children- The Chocolate Experience, a half-hour programme of tasting, demonstrations and chocolate history, is held regularly and is a great interactive and educational demo, where tasting is a definite perk and you’re able to help make your own chocolate to take home. Farm Sanctuary SA

This one is a must-visit for all animal lovers! Farm Sanctuary SA offers a sanctuary for both animals and visitors alike. This registered NPO offers the chance to ‘Pigcasso’, South Africa’s famed painting pig. Step through the impressive barn doors and prepare to have your very own ‘Babe’ moment where you wished you were Farmer Hoggett.

Visit the onsite OINK Gallery to view her available artworks and marvel at her creativity. While snacks aren’t currently available at the sanctuary (unless you’re a fan of grass and hay!), parents can grab a coffee and let the kiddies burn off some energy as they explore; seeing the animals in a very happy place!

For those looking to extend their stay – the ultimate bucket-list tick awaits with accommodation available in the barn, promising a night to remember,where you get properly involved in all the farmyard shenanigans. Bookings must be made in advance to avoid disappointment. Although Pigcasso doesn’t offer public painting demonstrations, visitors are warmly welcomed between 11 am and 4 pm daily. Franschhoek Village Market

Nothing says ‘it’s the weekend’ quite like a village stroll, market shopping and takeaway coffees (and babychinos, of course). So why not start your Saturday off on the perfect note, with the family in  tow, as you leisurely browse the stalls filled with artisanal crafts, locally produced goods and delicious treats. From handmade jewellery to organic produce, there’s something to delight every member of the family. Enjoy live music, food trucks, and a vibrant atmosphere as you soak up the sights and sounds of this bustling market. Oh, and did we mention the furry family members (on a leash) are also welcome, too?

Boschendal Wine Estate

Where Treehouse adventures, Pump Track thrills and outdoor outings await! Boschendal Estate, one of Franschhoek’s oldest wine estates dating back to 1685, needs to be at the top of the family-friendly ‘must see’ list. Offering a plethora of activities for families- guests can choose from two restaurants, including the kid-friendly Werf restaurant, or opt to enjoy a picnic on the expansive lawns with tables, chairs or blankets and beanbag options.

Kids will love the Tree House Playground and Pump Track setup, complete with slides, walkways, platforms, mushroom pods and acorn hideouts- all providing the perfect backdrop to endless hours of outdoor entertainment. 

Don’t miss the Kids Outdoor Experience programme, offering authentic farm experiences for children aged 4 to 12. Led and guided by the Tree House team, this eco-edutainment programme runs daily with morning, mid-day and afternoon slots, as well as immersive full-day options. So, get out there, boots laced and at the ready as you explore scenic hiking trails (Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve, located at the top of the Franschhoek Pass offers a variety of hiking trails, catering to all levels) or enjoy a cycle around town. There are also options to go horseback riding through vineyards, or try your hand at fly-fishing – a great bonding activity for the dads to get behind.
