Framed by the Simonsberg mountain range, Boschendal’s Orchard Cottages are paradise for families and friends, with large verandahs for braais beneath the stars, and a round swimming pool surrounded by deckchairs for lazy afternoons. The cottages’ interiors were designed to encourage memorable moments with special people, with a relaxed aesthetic and ‘upcycled furniture’ that reflects the farm’s ethical emphasis on sustainability.

With Boschendal being a South African Heritage Site, interior designer Danela Conti Bryant kept a historical focus in her collaboration with architect Philip Briel to oversee the renovation of the labourers’ houses into the Orchard Cottages. She incorporated a clear nod to the traditional Cape vernacular in her aesthetic, which includes vintage farming tools to add authenticity. Other examples of this can be seen in the trek tables, and gleaming yellowwood furniture.

Much of the furnishings were ‘foraged’ – sourced from two warehouses on the farm, packed with historical period pieces recovered from the Manor House and various other buildings. Conti was allowed to take her pick of chairs, marble-topped vanity dressers, glass cabinets, and bookshelves, which she then restored, painted, and made contemporary with clever accessories and colour usage.  This very much reflects her personal ethos and the Boschendal philosophy, which advocates for a farm-to-table approach, highlighting the importance of recycling and sustainability.

With family in mind, the cottages are stylish but not ‘precious’, “I wanted to create a space where people could feel at home, without being afraid to put their feet up. A space that encouraged guests to spend time with their loved ones in a stunning setting,” explains Conti.

The interior design was inspired by Boschendal’s expansive orchards and mountainous geography. Titling her vision ‘A Fruit Picker’s Paradise’, Conti wanted to depict the cornucopia of fruit through vivid prints, organic shapes, and pops of colour.

The eye-catching fruit prints adorning the Orchard Cottages’ walls are often remarked on by guests. Specially designed by Conti then made by Lula Fabrics, these pieces are one-of-a-kind, and epitomise the tangible spirit of natural energy that Boschendal embodies. Says Conti, “Boschendal is special. There’s a feeling of renewal there – like if one were to stick a twig in the ground it’d immediately grow into a tree. This energy of growth is all around, and something I wanted my design to encapsulate.”

Other special design touches include the Moroccan tiles in the bathroom – chosen for their vibrant colour – and the lights, which are all handcrafted from Consol jars to evoke a ‘plaas huis’ feel.

Orchard Cottages are secreted under expansive trees, across the road, and approximately 2km away from the Werf Restaurant and Farm Deli. Guests are encouraged to make full use of their privileged access to the farm, through horseback riding, dam swims, mountain biking, or exploring on foot. Ideal for family retreats, there’s plenty to keep everyone occupied – from the Werf Restaurant and fine wines to the lush lawns, hammocks, and extensive gardens.

This winter, escape to the winelands for less with the estate’s seasonal special. Between May and September, guests booking Sunday-Saturday stays in the Werf or Orchard Cottages will receive a 30% discount, along with special rates on certain activities and meals if pre-booked. From carriage rides and spa treatments to a three-course dinner at the Werf, it’s the ideal opportunity to experience the best of Boschendal.
