  1. Helping Hand in An Hour of Need – Together Franschhoek

In this ever-changing environment, Together Franschhoek, symbolises the  strength in community collaboration that the Franschhoek Valley is known for!

Assisting the community in establishing food distribution points throughout the valley, through the supply of fresh produce and ingredients, the installation of handwashing stations, and ensuring that social distancing measures and guidelines are in place, the Together Franschhoek team led by Ashley Bauer, with the help and guidance of community leaders, NGO’s and other key stakeholders, continuously assesses and re-assesses the needs of our community with food relief remaining a primary focus.

This mammoth operation is made possible through the team of volunteers from local businesses and residents, the wonderful NPO’s and the generosity and support of people like you!

Under the guidance of Foliage Restaurant’s Executive Chef, Chris Erasmus, and Isabelo’s Margot Janse,  a group of Franschhoek chefs, are ensuring that no hungry mouth goes unfed in the Franschhoek Valley.

Although there have been some very generous contributions since the unit was launched, they do rely on continued support. Just R250 will go a long way in sustaining this operation.

Franco headed by Rian Coetzee, the Isabelo Feeding Scheme, headed by Margot Janse and the Lions Ladies Club Franschhoek, headed by Lodine Maske, have offered their fundraising facilities to assist in this regard.

It is 2020 and StreetSmart South Africa celebrates its 15th anniversary of changing children’s lives R5 at a time.

Founded in Cape Town in 2005, StreetSmart SA has raised R11,6 million over 15 years in aid of 31 organisations caring for street children and children at risk of living on the streets.

StreetSmart raises funds in partnership with restaurants, accommodation establishments and wine tasting venues in the Western Cape, Garden Route and Gauteng.

These donations are disbursed annually to beneficiary organisations involved in education, skills training and family reunification of vulnerable children.

To celebrate this incredible 15 year milestone, StreetSmart acknowledged their Top 15 contributors for 2019 at a function in Cape Town: La Mouette, Gold Restaurant, Nonna Lina, Moyo Zoo Lake, Chatters Bistro, Foliage, The Fat Fish – Plett, Wellington Wines, Nguni Restaurant, Jordan Restaurant, Stacked Diner, Aubergine, Belvidere Manor, Social Eatery @ Knysna Hollow, and Moyo @ Kirstenbosch.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be at the top of StreetSmart’s annual contributors list. Thank you to each and every diner who helped out by eating out, said Mari Vigar of La Mouette.

Congratulations to La Mouette (Cape Town), GOLD Restaurant (Cape Town), Nonna Lina (Cape Town), Moyo Zoo Lake (Johannesburg) and Chatters Bistro (Knysna) for being StreetSmart’s Top 5 Fundraising Restaurants in 2019.

“Over the past 15 years I have constantly been reminded of people’s generosity. South Africans really care for those in need, they just need to know how to help. StreetSmart has shown how easy it is to make a difference,” says StreetSmart Founder Margi Biggs, who thanked the many restaurants and volunteers who have travelled along this 15 year journey with StreetSmart.

“Donating to StreetSmart where you eat, drink and sleep is the responsible way to help a street child,” explains Chairperson Melanie Burke, one of StreetSmart’s founder members. Another founder member who still serves on the StreetSmart board today is well known Cape Town hotelier, Nils Heckscher.

Starting from humble beginnings in June 2005 with 10 Cape Town restaurants raising R1 644, StreetSmart has grown to 100 partner establishments and has disbursed over R1 million per year for the past six years to beneficiary organisations. Expanding steadily from year to year, StreetSmart is currently represented in 12 towns and cities in the Western Cape, Garden Route and Gauteng.

Communities where StreetSmart partner establishments are situated benefit directly from this initiative as all donations received stay in the area and are utilised for local upliftment programmes.

After months of waiting the big day finally arrived as the winners of the 2018 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards were announced. Of the 30 nominees a list of South Africa’s Top 20 were selected, which saw four Franschhoek eateries securing a spot on this sought after list. The winning restaurants were chosen by a core panel of anonymous judges and convened by Margot Janse.

    La Petite Colombe

Already recognised both locally and internationally for their five-star culinary offerings, the Franschhoek chefs and restaurants to be announced as the Top 20 winners were the following, in order of rank:

Scot Kriton and John Norris-Rogers, La Petite Colombe (#5)
    Chris Erasmus, Foliage (#13)
Darren Badenhorst, Le Coin Français (#14)
Liam Tomlin and David Schneider, Chefs Warehouse at Maison (#16)

The Werf Restaurant at Boschendal, with Executive Chef Christiaan Campbell at the helm, was this year’s recipient of the Eat Out Woolworths Sustainability Award. According to the judges the restaurant was truly deserving of this award as Chef Christiaan is a prime example of a chef and farm working with nature to regenerate and restore.
