  1. South African hotel Awarded Best Hotel in the world at the Conde Nast Traveler Reader Choice Awards

It was an impressive accolade for South Africa when The Royal Portfolio’s La Residence in Franschhoek was voted The Best Hotel in the World by Condé Nast Traveler magazine’s discerning readers.

This was announced at the annual Readers’ Choice Awards that rates the world’s best cities, islands, cruise lines, airlines, hotels, and resorts.

“I am truly honoured and humbled by the award and I am pleased South Africa has been recognised internationally as a luxury destination,” says Liz Biden, the owner of three exclusive private hotels operating under The Royal Portfolio umbrella. They include Royal Malewane, a safari lodge in the greater Kruger area; Birkenhead House in Hermanus; and La Residence in Franschhoek which together offer luxury beach, bush and wine-land experiences. “This could not have been achieved without the dedication and hard work of the La Residence and The Royal Portfolio teams that uphold our strong company purpose:  ‘To give guests a complete experience and a perfect stay’,” she adds.

La Residence – in the heart of the Franschhoek Valley, one of South Africa’s most picturesque wine regions and the country’s food and wine capital – is encircled by vineyards, plum orchards and olive groves. It represents the epitome of grandeur and grace. From the lavish suites and villas to refined dining and uniquely-crafted, wine-tasting experiences, La Residence radiates sophistication. Biden has instilled consideration and respect into her team so here you’ll find warm, authentic hospitality. It’s what memories are made of – a place you’ll want to revisit.

This year the survey recorded an astonishing reader participation of 79,268 entries – almost doubling the number of contributions in the 2012 competition. These astute and dedicated travellers cast 1,3 million votes for more than 16 000 properties around the world, resulting in the most comprehensive “best of the best” travel awards to date.
