It is 2020 and StreetSmart South Africa celebrates its 15th anniversary of changing children’s lives R5 at a time.

Founded in Cape Town in 2005, StreetSmart SA has raised R11,6 million over 15 years in aid of 31 organisations caring for street children and children at risk of living on the streets.

StreetSmart raises funds in partnership with restaurants, accommodation establishments and wine tasting venues in the Western Cape, Garden Route and Gauteng.

These donations are disbursed annually to beneficiary organisations involved in education, skills training and family reunification of vulnerable children.

To celebrate this incredible 15 year milestone, StreetSmart acknowledged their Top 15 contributors for 2019 at a function in Cape Town: La Mouette, Gold Restaurant, Nonna Lina, Moyo Zoo Lake, Chatters Bistro, Foliage, The Fat Fish – Plett, Wellington Wines, Nguni Restaurant, Jordan Restaurant, Stacked Diner, Aubergine, Belvidere Manor, Social Eatery @ Knysna Hollow, and Moyo @ Kirstenbosch.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be at the top of StreetSmart’s annual contributors list. Thank you to each and every diner who helped out by eating out, said Mari Vigar of La Mouette.

Congratulations to La Mouette (Cape Town), GOLD Restaurant (Cape Town), Nonna Lina (Cape Town), Moyo Zoo Lake (Johannesburg) and Chatters Bistro (Knysna) for being StreetSmart’s Top 5 Fundraising Restaurants in 2019.

“Over the past 15 years I have constantly been reminded of people’s generosity. South Africans really care for those in need, they just need to know how to help. StreetSmart has shown how easy it is to make a difference,” says StreetSmart Founder Margi Biggs, who thanked the many restaurants and volunteers who have travelled along this 15 year journey with StreetSmart.

“Donating to StreetSmart where you eat, drink and sleep is the responsible way to help a street child,” explains Chairperson Melanie Burke, one of StreetSmart’s founder members. Another founder member who still serves on the StreetSmart board today is well known Cape Town hotelier, Nils Heckscher.

Starting from humble beginnings in June 2005 with 10 Cape Town restaurants raising R1 644, StreetSmart has grown to 100 partner establishments and has disbursed over R1 million per year for the past six years to beneficiary organisations. Expanding steadily from year to year, StreetSmart is currently represented in 12 towns and cities in the Western Cape, Garden Route and Gauteng.

Communities where StreetSmart partner establishments are situated benefit directly from this initiative as all donations received stay in the area and are utilised for local upliftment programmes.

StreetSmart SA, an organisation dedicated to helping street children rebuild their lives through donations from restaurants, accommodation establishments and wine tasting venues in the Western Cape, Garden Route, Gauteng and KZN, has handed over R110,000 to their Franschhoek beneficiary for 2019.

This grand effort is part of the total StreetSmart allocation of R1,7 million distributed nationally for 2019 to organisations working with children at risk.

“This amount is made possible by the generosity of the patrons and our partners, who in spite of tough economic circumstances still give to make a difference to the lives of children, R5 at a time!”, says Margi Biggs, founder of StreetSmart.

The Franschhoek beneficiary is The Kusasa Project, a local organisation assisting children in need by providing support, encouragement and a safe and stimulating learning environment. The StreetSmart funds were handed over at an event held at Bread & Wines Restaurant on Môreson Wine Farm.

“At The Kusasa Project we try and create a safe space for children, but this is only possible with support such as this wonderful donation from StreetSmart. We see the impact of their financial support daily in our teaching and interaction with our learners. We are very grateful for all involved to make the employment of a social worker possible. Thank you!” said Mari-Louise Raymond of The Kusasa Project.

There are currently 5 establishments in Franschhoek that have embraced StreetSmart’s vision to make a real difference to the lives of street children or children at risk of living on the streets. These are Bread & Wine, Foliage, Haute Cabrière, The Franschhoek Beer Co. and Monneaux @ Franschhoek Country House. Funds are raised by adding a R5 donation to each patron’s bill. This donation is voluntary and donors are able to contribute more if they wish to. With this generous gesture, StreetSmart establishments and their guests are making a real difference to the lives of vulnerable and street children in their local communities.

“Through the generosity of our fundraising partners and other supporters we are able to continue to expand our national footprint. For the fifth consecutive year, StreetSmart will be disbursing over R1 million to beneficiaries nationally, enabling us to support 35 programmes. We are so excited to be able to continue this work through responsible giving via StreetSmart and we extend an invitation to restaurants, accommodation establishments and wine tasting venues to become StreetSmart in their local areas,” says Melanie Burke, Chairman of StreetSmart SA.

StreetSmart SA was set up in 2005 by a group of concerned Capetonians under the patronage of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and comprises resourceful board members representing business, and the hospitality and tourism industries. Similar StreetSmart organisations also run independently in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and The Netherlands.

StreetSmart SA is registered as a Public Benefit Organisation as well as a Non-profit Organisation and ensures that every cent donated by guests goes towards social and educational upliftment projects for street children. StreetSmart’s goal is to be part of the process of social normalisation and to encourage the public not to give money into the hands of a child as this keeps them on the streets. In essence, donating to StreetSmart where you eat, drink and sleep is the responsible way to help a street child.
