The 2020 harvest season has begun and, during this time the winemakers and their teams shift into full gear as they spend long days in the vineyards selecting only the best fruit to make world-class wines the region is known for. Last year Winter brought with it good rains and we remain positive that this year’s harvest will be bountiful.

Although Franschhoek is better known for producing world-class wines and home to some of the country’s top restaurants, it is also the place to be for unforgettable outdoor activities. The warmer weather during the Summer months spoils us with extended daylight hours – perfect for taking advantage of the region’s many open-air events. La Motte’s hiking trail, a trail run or MTB excursion along the Berg River Dam, horseback riding or a leisurely hike in the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve admiring the flora and fauna, are just some of the adventure goings-on in and around Franschhoek. What about learning some interesting facts about Franschhoek whilst taking a leisurely stroll as part of a group on the unique Village Walk. Suited to all levels, there is guaranteed to be something for everyone.

Less than 60 minutes from Cape Town why not treat the family to a fun weekend in the valley to get away from the hustle and bustle of work and school. Or simply a retreat for the day to unwind and relax. Sample superb wines at some of Franschhoek’s finest wine estates, ranging from large to boutique farms – the list is endless. Most of the farms offer something to eat, which is the perfect opportunity to combine your wine tasting experience with a lazy lunch whilst taking in the gorgeous views.

For the slightly cooler Summer weather (albeit a rare gem) enjoy an informative Garden Tour, which is suited to young and old. Not only do you get to learn about a range of plant species, but you can also pick any of the seasonal fruit off the trees. For those with a sweet tooth a chocolate demonstration is a must on your bucket list of things to do when next in Franschhoek. With schools closing towards the end of March why not schedule a day trip with them during the holidays, or better yet book a mini family vacation during the Easter holidays, which this  year takes place over the weekend of 10 and 12 April. Even more reason to make a weekend (or long weekend) of your next trip to Franschhoek. A day simply isn’t enough to experience all that our beautiful valley has to offer.

Should you find yourself in the valley on the last Friday of February and March be sure to take advantage of our Summer Season Shopping, where most of the retail outlets situated along Main Road will stay open until 8pm. The warmer weather and longer daylight hours allow for a leisurely walk where you’ll discover our village’s quaint independently owned stores. Allow yourself time to browse as you discover a few unique retail gems.
