Franschhoek Wine Valley

The Winter Sculpture Fair returns to Nirox on 7 and 8 May 2016

Artlogic’s popular Winter Sculpture Fair returns to the Nirox Sculpture Park near the Cradle of Humankind on the weekend of 7 and 8 May 2016. This year the Nirox Foundation has partnered with Yorkshire Sculpture Park to create a remarkable exhibition of 40 international and local works. Experience this world-class sculpture show while enjoying Franschhoek's finest food and wine.

The Franschhoek Wine Valley is proud to partner with this prestigious event once again. The medium of sculpture as an art form is in perfect harmony with Franschhoek’s art, food and wine lifestyle offering to our visitors and clients in Franschhoek and in Johannesburg.

‘The Winter Sculpture Fair is the only event in Africa dedicated to the medium of sculpture,’ says Artlogic Director Mandla Sibeko. ‘It has become our most popular Fair, and this is thanks to its unique setting, the rare opportunity to view a sculpture exhibition of this scale, and of course the fact that we offer food and wine from the culinary capital of Franschhoek. These elements combined make for a truly winning formula.’

Now in its fourth year, the Fair will once again offer visitors a taste of exquisite food and fine wine from the Franschhoek Wine Valley. Top restaurants and wineries will set up shop alongside artisanal cheese, charcuterie and chocolate stands, and guests will be able to purchase goods from roughly 40 exhibitors to tailor-make their own picnic experience.

This year’s sculpture exhibition, A Place in Time, will be produced in partnership with the acclaimed Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

The exhibition presents over 40 new sculptures by artists from Africa, Europe and the USA – including Richard Long, Willem Boshoff, Nandipha Mntambo, Tom Price, Moataz Nasr, Rachael Champion, Anton Burdakov, Tom Price, Serge Nitegeka, Mikhael Subotsky, Angus Taylor and Marco Cianfanelli – created in response to this highly significant environment. The exhibition considers contemporary sculpture practice within a human tradition to make and appreciate objects, that is seemingly as old as we are, and will be underpinned by an exceptional display of artefacts on loan from the University of the Witwatersrand Origins Centre Museum collection.

A Place in Time is curated by Helen Pheby PhD, Senior Curator at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, in collaboration with Mary-Jane Darroll of Nirox, assisted by interns Naudia Yorke and Danika Bester.

The exhibition will celebrate, encourage and share the highest standard of creative practice informed by and focusing attention on the exceptionally important context of South Africa as a centre of global heritage and an exciting contemporary art destination. A Place in Time is supported by the SA-UK Seasons 2014 & 2015, a partnership between the Department of Arts and Culture South Africa and the British Council.

The show will open to the public at Artlogic’s Winter Sculpture Fair, where visitors will be able to wander through the park and view the artworks, before picnicking in the countryside with family and friends.

The 2016 Winter Sculpture Fair is open from 10h00 – 17h00 daily on both 7 and 8 May 2016. Tickets will only be available online, prior to the event. Tickets cost R165 and are available through Children 12 years and under enter free. For more information, visit; email or like the Winter Sculpture Fair on Facebook.
